Verizon is the newest name that joins the list of US carriers supporting Google's unified advanced messaging solution known as RCS (Rich Communication Services). For the time being, just two phones will be compatible with RCS Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+, but Verizon says that additional phones will be added in the future.

With Verizon's Advanced Messaging, which is supposed to replace SMS at some point, Galaxy S9/S9+ users will be able to send larger text messages (up to 8000 characters long), read receipts (see when their messages have been read), create group chats with up to 100 participants, share pictures and videos in high-quality, as well as their location.

Also, the advanced messaging solution allows users to send larger attachments than ever before, but a new option to send messages over Wi-Fi (even when the cellular connection is offline) is available too.

Unfortunately, Verizon's RCS implementation is not compatible with similar solution integrated by other carriers, which means it's only usable between Verizon customers. Google launched RCS with the purpose of unifying all messaging solutions under a single banner. Sadly, US carriers think otherwise.
